FRP grating is a fiberglass-composite grid that resists corrosion, weighs ~a third of steel, and carries most industrial walkway/platform loads; sizing, load class and surface are the key order specs.
- Best for: engineers and procurement new to FRP grating
- Specify when: size, load class and surface (grit/convex) must be confirmed before order
- Key spec: ISO 9001 supply, molded 25–50 mm / pultruded 25–100 mm, FR on request
New to fiberglass composite grating? This FAQ collects the questions engineers, procurement teams and contractors ask most before they order — what FRP grating is, how sizes and load capacity work, which resin to specify, how installation is done, and what to expect on samples, lead time and shipping. Every answer comes from FRP Grating Master, a direct FRP composite manufacturer with 20+ years of in-house production.
What is FRP grating?
FRP (fibre-reinforced polymer) grating — also called GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) grating — is a lightweight open-mesh panel moulded or pultruded from continuous glass fibre embedded in a cured thermoset resin. Unlike steel, it does not rust, is non-conductive and magnetic-transparent, and up to 70% lighter, yet its strength-to-weight ratio is high enough for industrial walkways, platforms, stair treads and trench covers. Two process families dominate: molded grating (bi-directional square mesh, ideal for general flooring and chemical exposure) and pultruded grating (unidirectional bearing bars, engineered for longer spans and heavier point loads).Products, materials and resin options
FRP Grating Master manufactures molded and pultruded panels, solid covers, structural profiles, stair treads and handrail systems. The resin system is the single biggest decision: general-purpose polyester for dry, mild environments; isophthalic polyester for moderate chemical exposure; and vinyl ester for heavy acid, alkali and offshore service. Fire-retardant phenolic and UV-stabilised grades are available for public areas and outdoor exposure. For the full chemical-resistance match, see our resin selection guide.Standard sizes, thickness and load capacity
Standard molded panels ship as 1220 × 3660 mm (or 1220 × 2440 mm) sheets in 25, 30, 38 and 50 mm thicknesses, with mesh sizes of 19×19, 38×38 and 50×50 mm. Pultruded panels use bearing bars in a range of depths and are quoted by clear span and live load. The safe working load depends on thickness, mesh, resin type and the deflection limit (commonly L/120 or L/180). For a quick estimate use our load-table and span guide, and check standard panel sizes before you cut the drawing. How to install FRP grating
Installing FRP grating is faster than steel: panels cut with standard woodworking or abrasive tools, there is no hot work, and a two-person crew can handle large sheets. Panels rest on steel or FRP supports and are fixed with stainless steel grating clips (M-clip, C-clip or Z-clip in SS304/SS316), spaced per the load table — typically one clip per bearing bar end and intermediate clips every 300–500 mm. Always support every bearing bar and never cantilever a panel over an empty frame. Our step-by-step installation guide walks through layout, cutting, fixing and edge trim.Samples, custom sizes and OEM orders
Yes to all of it. Small sample pieces are available for quality evaluation before a bulk order, along with material test reports and dimensional inspection data. We accept OEM custom dimensions, colours, surface treatments (grit-top, concave, smooth, solid cover) and shapes — from CAD design through tooling to full production. Tell us your application, chemicals, span and load and our engineers return a recommendation. More on our custom fabrication and OEM/ODM service.Quality control and testing
Every batch runs through incoming-material inspection, in-process dimensional checks, resin-content testing, Barcol hardness verification and final load/deflection testing. Inspection records are traceable per batch, and third-party reports (SGS, Intertek) plus ISO 9001 documentation are available on request. This is what lets us back panels with a long service-life warranty in corrosive service. Routine upkeep is minimal — see our maintenance and cleaning guide.Lead time, packaging and shipping
Standard products ship in 7–15 working days; custom products with new tooling take 15–30 working days depending on complexity and quantity. Panels are packed on wooden pallets with protective wrap to avoid surface scuffing, and we support sea freight on FOB, CIF or DDP terms with container-loading supervision. Air or express courier is available for urgent samples. Compare landed cost before you commit — our pricing guide explains how panel type, resin and quantity move the USD per square metre price.Frequently Asked Questions
FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) grating is a molded or pultruded fiberglass composite grid used for corrosion-resistant walkways, platforms and floorings. It combines glass fiber reinforcement with thermoset resin (polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy) for superior strength-to-weight ratio, zero rust and 20+ year service life.
