Cooling Tower FRP Grating
FRP cooling tower grating replaces stainless and galvanized steel support grids that corrode in constant hot water, spray and chemical treatment duty. FRP Grating Master supplies molded and pultruded fiberglass grating for fill support, drift eliminator decks, air-intake louvers and external walkways.
Cooling tower FRP grating is specified where steel support grids rust within a few cooling seasons and aluminum suffers galvanic and chemical attack. Inside counter-flow and cross-flow towers, panels carry PVC fill, drift eliminators and distribution system load while staying immersed in warm recirculating water and biocide treatment. Outside the shell, they form maintenance walkways around the basin, fan decks and ladders landings.
FRP does not rust, scale up or lose section to corrosion, so support grids keep their rated span for the tower design life. Vinyl ester resin is the recommended system for hot water and continuous chemical exposure; isophthalic polyester suits milder make-up water and external access. Panels are cut to the tower drawing with penetrations for support beams, distribution pipes and ladders, and fixed with stainless steel clips — no welding, no hot work on the tower roof.

Resin & Material Selection
| Resin | Role | Best Environment | Fire Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl ester | Recommended | Hot recirculating water, biocides, acid/alkali cleaning | ASTM E-84 Class B |
| Isophthalic polyester | Baseline | Mild make-up water, external walkways, louver screens | ASTM E-84 Class B |
| Phenolic | Premium | Fire-critical turbine decks and enclosed plant | ASTM E-84 Class A |
For cooling-tower wet duty we specify vinyl ester as default; it resists chlorine, bromide, acid cleaning and warm water far better than standard orthophthalic polyester. Send us your water chemistry and we will confirm the resin grade.
Applications and Project Experience
Fill support grids: molded 38 mm vinyl ester panels supporting PVC film fill over the tower air plenum — no rust staining on the fill, no sag from corrosion section loss.
Drift eliminator & distribution decks: access panels above the cold-water basin for inspection of nozzles and eliminators, in grit-top anti-slip finish.
Air-intake louver screens: mini-mesh 12×12 mm panels that keep debris out while letting air through, cut to the louver opening.
External walkways and fan-deck access: pultruded I-bar grating over long support spans around the fan stack and basin rim, non-conductive and immune to salt-laden drift.
Span and Support Spacing
Recommended maximum support spacing (deflection-limited, typical indicative values):
| Thickness | Type | Max Support Spacing | Typical Duty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 mm | Molded | 450 – 600 mm | Louver screens, light fill support |
| 30 mm | Molded | 600 mm | Fill support, light walkway |
| 38 mm | Molded | 750 mm | Fill support + maintenance access |
| 38–50 mm | Pultruded | 900 – 1200 mm | Fan decks, long external spans |
