Initial Cost vs Total Cost of Ownership
Steel grating has a lower upfront material cost than FRP, typically 20 to 30 percent cheaper per square meter. However, steel requires hot-dip galvanizing or painting for corrosion protection, adding 15 to 25 percent to cost. FRP needs no protective coating. Over a 25-year lifecycle, FRP delivers 40 to 60 percent total cost savings due to zero maintenance, no repainting, and no rust replacement.
Weight and Handling
Steel grating weighs 60 to 80 kg/m2, three to four times heavier than FRP (12 to 35 kg/m2). Steel requires cranes and multiple workers for installation; FRP panels are hand-carried by one person. A 40-foot container holds 400 to 600 m2 of steel vs 1500 to 2000 m2 of FRP, cutting per-unit shipping costs by 60 percent or more.
Corrosion: The Deciding Factor
Steel rusts. Even galvanized steel eventually corrodes in chemical, saltwater, and acidic environments, requiring inspection, touch-up painting, and eventual replacement. FRP never rusts. Vinyl ester FRP withstands 98 percent sulfuric acid, 50 percent sodium hydroxide, and continuous salt spray. For wastewater, chemical, marine, and food processing applications, FRP is the only cost-effective long-term solution.
Strength and Stiffness
Steel has higher tensile strength (400-550 MPa) and modulus (200 GPa) than FRP (150-300 MPa, 10-25 GPa). Steel deflects less under load and supports heavier point loads. However, FRP is engineered to meet specific load requirements through thickness selection and fiber orientation. For 95 percent of industrial walkway and platform applications, FRP provides adequate safety factors at much lower weight.
Maintenance and Lifespan
Steel grating requires annual inspection, biennial repainting or galvanizing touch-up, and replacement every 10 to 15 years in corrosive environments. FRP requires only periodic washing with water and detergent, with a 25-plus year service life. FRP never needs painting, never develops sharp rust edges, and maintains its structural integrity indefinitely in appropriate environments.
Safety Considerations
FRP is non-conductive, eliminating electrocution risk near electrical equipment. Steel conducts electricity. FRP has built-in anti-slip surfaces (concave or grit-top) that never wear smooth like painted steel. FRP does not develop sharp burrs or rust flakes that cause cuts. Steel grating can become dangerously hot in sunlight and slippery when wet.
When to Choose Steel
Steel remains appropriate for: extremely heavy forklift or vehicle traffic (H-20 loading), very long spans exceeding 1500mm, high-temperature environments above 120 degrees Celsius continuous, and applications where code requires steel. For all other industrial grating applications, FRP offers superior total value. Contact ZeAllgrate for a project-specific cost-benefit analysis.
Frequently Asked Questions
