What is FRP grating?
FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) grating, also called GRP grating, is a composite material made of glass fiber reinforcement embedded in a thermoset resin matrix. It is used as a lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternative to steel and aluminum grating for walkways, platforms, stair treads, and trench covers in industrial environments.
What standard sizes are available?
Molded FRP grating is commonly produced in 1220 x 3660mm and 1000 x 4000mm panels, with thicknesses of 25mm, 30mm, 38mm, 40mm, and 50mm. Standard mesh openings include 38 x 38mm (standard mesh) and 19 x 19mm (mini mesh). Pultruded grating comes in 38mm and 50mm depths with T-bar or I-bar load bars. Custom cut-to-size panels are available for any opening dimension.
Which resin type should I choose?
Orthophthalic polyester is the economical choice for dry, mildly corrosive environments. Isophthalic polyester offers better corrosion resistance for chemical processing. Vinyl ester provides maximum chemical resistance for strong acid, alkali, and solvent exposure. Phenolic resin is specified where fire safety and low smoke emission are critical, such as offshore and marine applications. Your ZeAllgrate engineer can recommend the right resin based on your specific chemical exposure data.
How much weight can FRP grating support?
Load capacity depends on thickness, mesh type, span distance, and resin system. A 38mm standard mesh molded panel at 600mm span typically supports 350 to 450 kg per square meter uniform load. 50mm heavy-duty pultruded grating can support forklift and vehicle loads at appropriate spans. Always refer to load tables and consult a structural engineer for critical applications.
What colors are available?
Standard colors include gray, green, yellow, and orange. Custom colors are available with minimum order quantities. Color is integrated throughout the resin matrix during manufacturing, so it will not chip or peel like painted steel. UV stabilizers can be added for outdoor applications to prevent color fading.
How is FRP grating installed?
FRP grating panels are placed on supporting steel or FRP structures and secured with stainless steel (304 or 316) C-clips, L-clips, or M-clips. Allow 3 to 5mm expansion gap per panel edge. Panels can be cut on-site with a jigsaw or circular saw with a carbide or diamond blade. No welding or hot work is required, making installation faster and safer than steel grating.
Does FRP grating meet fire safety standards?
FRP grating can achieve Class 1 flame spread rating per ASTM E84 (flame spread index 25 or less) when formulated with appropriate fire-retardant additives. Phenolic resin grating offers the highest fire performance with low smoke and low toxicity. Marine-grade grating meets SOLAS and IMO standards for shipboard use. Always specify fire rating requirements at the time of order.
Frequently Asked Questions
